Looking for QCTO accredited training providers in South Africa? Start with the official QCTO database of accredited providers. Use the published records to check the organisation and qualification you are considering, then confirm that the proposed training arrangements match its approval.

This guide explains what learners and employers should verify, and how training organisations can prepare to become accredited Skills Development Providers (SDPs).

What Does QCTO Accreditation Mean?

The Quality Council for Trades and Occupations accredits providers to offer specified programmes within the Occupational Qualifications Sub-Framework. Accreditation recognises a provider’s capacity to deliver the approved programme against the applicable requirements. Its scope matters: approval for one qualification does not establish approval for every course advertised by the same organisation. Check the actual programme details and approval conditions when comparing providers.

For example, when comparing two administration courses, ask each provider for the qualification ID. Similar course titles can describe different programmes, and the provider’s approval must cover the qualification you intend to complete.

How to Verify a QCTO Accredited Training Provider

Open the official provider database and request the provider’s current accreditation letter, including any relevant annexures. Compare the following details:

  1. Provider identity: Match the legal or trading name to the organisation offering the training. Ask for clarification if the names differ.
  2. Qualification: Compare the full title, qualification ID and NQF level with the programme being advertised.
  3. Accreditation scope: Confirm that the specific programme appears in the provider’s approved scope.
  4. Training site: Check the approved address and obtain clarification about any additional venue or delivery arrangement.
  5. Validity: Review the accreditation dates and any conditions or subsequent approval letters affecting the proposed intake.

If the provider is absent from the published list, contact QCTO for confirmation. QCTO advises that newly accredited providers may not yet appear. Send the provider’s name, qualification details and accreditation reference so the enquiry can be checked against the correct record.

Keep copies of the evidence you reviewed and note when you checked it. Employers comparing quotations can use the same checks for each shortlisted provider, alongside their assessment of delivery capacity and learner support.

Check the Learning and Assessment Arrangements

Before enrolling or appointing a provider, ask how the programme will work in practice. Useful questions include:

  • What are the entry requirements and planned training dates?
  • Where will practical activities and any required workplace experience take place?
  • Who will arrange and supervise workplace learning?
  • What fees, assessment charges and learning resources are included?
  • How will learners receive support, results and information about final assessment?

For qualifications requiring an External Integrated Summative Assessment (EISA), confirm the assessment centre arrangements. Provider accreditation and assessment centre accreditation serve different purposes. An SDP may deliver training while learners complete their EISA through a separately accredited assessment centre.

Can Accredited Providers Offer Online Training?

Online or blended delivery may be possible where the qualification and QCTO requirements permit it. Ask the provider to explain its approved delivery arrangements and how practical learning, workplace experience and assessment will be completed where required. An online course description alone does not establish that every component can be completed remotely.

How to Become a QCTO Accredited Training Provider

If you want to offer occupational training, begin with the qualification your organisation intends to deliver. Review its curriculum and resource requirements before committing to premises, equipment or materials. The preparation process generally includes:

  1. Define your offering: Identify the qualification, proposed site, delivery method and intended learner group.
  2. Establish institutional readiness: Prepare the required organisational, financial, staffing and quality management evidence.
  3. Prepare programme delivery: Align materials, assessments, facilities and any workplace arrangements with the curriculum.
  4. Submit the application: Use the current QCTO application channel for the relevant programme type and provide the requested evidence.
  5. Complete verification: Demonstrate readiness, respond to findings and obtain the formal accreditation outcome.

Our guide to QCTO accreditation requirements in South Africa explains the supporting evidence in more detail. For curriculum resources, see our information on QCTO training materials.

Maintain Your Accreditation After Approval

Accreditation comes with continuing responsibilities. Maintain the staff, resources and systems needed for your approved programmes, keep learner records current and meet applicable reporting requirements. Review changes to premises, delivery arrangements or programme scope before implementing them. Keep renewal planning on your compliance calendar and make sure your public course information reflects your current approval.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I find a list of QCTO accredited training providers?

Visit the official QCTO provider database. Check the provider and qualification details, then compare them with the organisation’s current accreditation letter and the programme being offered.

What should I do if a provider is missing from the QCTO database?

Contact QCTO to confirm its status. A missing entry does not, by itself, establish that a provider is unaccredited, because newly accredited providers may not yet appear. Provide the organisation’s name, accreditation reference and qualification details when making your enquiry.

Is a SAQA registered qualification the same as an accredited provider?

No. SAQA registers qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework, while the relevant quality council accredits providers to offer them. A qualification ID identifies the qualification; it does not prove that a particular organisation is approved to deliver it. Check both records.

Can I study a QCTO qualification online?

Online or blended learning may be available where the qualification and approved delivery arrangements allow it. Confirm how any required practical activities, workplace experience and assessments will be completed before enrolling.

How does my organisation become a QCTO accredited training provider?

Identify the qualification you want to offer, review its curriculum requirements and prepare the necessary institutional and programme evidence. Apply through the relevant QCTO channel and complete the required evaluation and verification process. Nelson AA can assist with readiness reviews, documentation and preparation.

How long is QCTO provider accreditation valid?

QCTO’s provider guidance specifies a five-year accreditation period, subject to continued compliance. Check the actual dates and conditions in the provider’s approval documents, together with any later notices affecting its status. An old accreditation letter should not be treated as sufficient evidence of current approval.
